When I did the Rame Artisans Coliective Craft fair just before last Christmas, I found a huge exposure of clay in a foundation trench. So I’m going to test it’s plasticity. Hopefully it will be as plastic as other examples of this clay from across the region. This is the yellow clay from weathered slates.

I’ve been looking for clay deposits in Plymouth for years I’ve searched Budshead Woods. And I now have scientific evidence that Plymouth is covered in clay. There’s weathering feldspar, pieces of granite, quartz, tin oxide mineral, galaena, china clay, copper oxide - malachite, calcite, flint, Devon yellow clay (processed, made into a pot and fired)!. I make pots with porcelain and please myself with the conceit that all the materials could have been sourced locally for this clay. There is even a source of bentonite in...
